NCIS: Origins Dog Gary Callaghan left viewers shocked when he was stabbed in the line of duty – but did he survive?
During Tuesday, April 7th, plot NCIS prequela flashback showing how Gary got into Franks’ (Kyle Schmid) Life. Then in the present, while they are chasing a suspect, the dog is seriously stabbed. The blade ended up damaging several nerves that control movement in his hind legs, leading veterinarians to believe he would never be able to walk again.
End of episode Scenes from Gary’s induction and retirement ceremonies, where he rises to receive his medal in recognition of his courage and heroism. (Gary will remain as agent, splitting his time between Franks on the weekends and Herm on the weekdays.)
“Maybe it was just courage or hell, or maybe it was a miracle, but in that moment, Gary Callahan stood up and took his first step — for the second time,” Mark HarmonGibbs says in voiceover.
NCIS: OriginsPremiering in October 2024, it tells the story of young Gibbs— role originating from Mark Harmon — years before the incident NCIS. The new series is set less than a year after Gibbs’ wife and daughter were murdered. In season one, Gibbs starts a new job as a special agent in the Office of National Intelligence’s Camp Pendleton office while still dealing with the aftermath of losing his family.

“Our ultimate goal from the beginning has been to make a show that fans of the original series will love and feel satisfied with. But[it’s also]a show that new viewers can reach from the get-go with NCIS: Origins,” said co-creator Gina Monreal explain to US Weekly April 2025. “The audience can jump right in without getting confused and really get to know our characters and their stories. We’ve always looked at it from that perspective. I feel like we’ve succeeded.”
She continued: “We were really passionate about sticking to canon (events). We were strict about that. We wanted to pay homage to the Mothership. We’ve all written about the Mothership and loved the show. But we also loved expanding on our new characters and exploring their emotional lives.”
At that time, Monreal and co-creator David J. North talking about how They were able to explore everything planned in the first season, but there was one idea they wanted to expand on.
“Agent Gary Callahan — or the K-9 agent — we could have had more of him in there. So we needed more flashbacks,” North quipped. “Maybe this is the next spin-off. NCIS: Gary Callahan.”
