Daniil Medvedev His hostility to clay courts has been known in the past; Emotions boiling again Wednesday, April 7, Monte Carlo Masters.
Medvedev, ranked 10th in the world, 30 years old, suffered his first career defeat 0-6, 0-6 and fell to 90th in only 49 minutes. Matteo Berrettini. After losing the first set and struggling to start the second, Medvedev took out his frustration on his racket, throw it to the ground Frustrated six times, the crowd cheered each time he hit the pitch.
When he was done, a seemingly satisfied Medvedev calmly placed the damaged racquet in a nearby trash can. His collapse caused him to violate the Code of Sportsmanship.
Medvedev has previously called clay courts “a loser’s court,” and told reporters in 2023 that he doesn’t begrudge those who enjoy clay because “if you like to play in the dirt like a dog, then I won’t judge.”
“When I talk about clay, I exaggerate a little bit — a lot,” he later told reporters. “After all, some players like to get dirty after playing on clay courts. I don’t like it, I can’t lie. Socks, you can throw them away because you wash them and there’s still dirt inside.”
After losing to 29-year-old Berrettini, Medvedev seemed at a loss when trying to explain what happened.

Medvedev added, “I just can’t control anything: coming up, serving. Actually, I served well, so it’s not clear what happened. But now I can’t do anything about it.”
As for Berrettini, he was understandably delighted with his performance, calling it “the best” of his life.
“I think I missed three shots in the whole game and it’s not easy against a crafty player like Daniel,” he told reporters. “I think the game plan was perfect and my weapons worked. I had two break points in the first game and then felt like I was playing better than him. I didn’t expect to win zero, zero like this. But I stayed focused because I know sometimes one or two breaks are not enough, so I kept working hard.”
