Lucid blames Q1 sales on furniture retailers

The Lucid team finished 2025 on the rise – building twice as many EVs as last year and reporting a 55% increase. Then the first part of 2026 arrived.

The company, which makes the Air sedan and Gravity SUV, said on Friday that sold 3,093 cars in the first quarter, a decrease of 42% from the previous quarter and about 0.5% lower than the same period last year. It built many more, about 5,500 in total.

Lucid said the marketing mix, and the gap between production and delivery, is not a demand problem. Instead, the company blames a supplier problem with its second-hand seats, which has hampered Lucid Gravity’s delivery for 29 days.

The seller’s story also inspired Lucid to remember more than 4,000 Gravity SUVs. Lucid told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it found some of the anchors for the seat belts in the second row of the SUV were not welded properly.

Lucid spokesperson Nick Twork confirmed to TechCrunch that the decline in sales is linked to issues with suppliers. He said that due to the unauthorized changes made by the dealer, the company suspended sales of the Gravity which lasted for most of February to ensure that the vehicles were in good condition before resuming them. Twork confirmed Lucid’s recent success, saying that “following eight quarters, we showed positive results in January and March that were close to expanding on a year-over-year basis.”

Lucid said in its security filing on Friday that the issue has been resolved, and the company appears confident that the disruption will not affect its production plans.

Lucid reaffirmed its original guidance of producing between 25,000 and 27,000 vehicles this year. Lucid has built 18,378 EVs in 2025. This would represent a 47% increase from last year.

Lucid’s sales woes come as the company prepares to begin production of its first car on a new low-cost platform aimed at the mass market. Lucid has said that the first car will cost about $50,000, a price that will put it in direct competition with the upcoming Rivian R2 SUV, as well as existing products such as the Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model 3, and Chevrolet Equinox EV.
