While Simpson and Knoxville both denied accusations that they had an inappropriate relationship at the time, the singer detailed their alleged emotional affair in her 2020 memoir, Open the book.

“I felt a pull that brought us together,” Simpson wrote of Knoxville, who was married to his first wife. Melanie Lynn Clapp, then. “To me, emotional cheating was worse than physical cheating. I know, and it’s funny, because I took sex very seriously and didn’t have sex before marriage. After I actually had sex, I understood that the emotional part was the most important. And Johnny and I did that.”

She added that the pair wrote “love letters” to each other. “It was like Johnny and I were prison pen pals, two people who wanted to be together so badly but were isolated — by the bar, by our stars, by our respective spouses,” Simpson wrote.

Knoxville has yet to publicly react to the claims in Simpson’s book.
