The European Union’s top agency has confirmed a cyberattack after hackers allegedly stole data stored in the cloud.
European Commission spokesperson Nika Blazevic confirmed to TechCrunch on Friday that the Commission “discovered a cyber-attack, which affected our cloud sector.”
“We have taken immediate action and we have the attack. Risk mitigation measures have been put in place. The investigation is ongoing but we can already confirm that the Commission’s internal systems were not affected by the cyber-attack,” he said.
In longer text on his websiteThe Commission said the breach “affected its cloud infrastructure that supports the Commission’s online presence on the Europa.eu platform,” which contains information about the Commission’s websites.
The Sleeping Computer reported the news about the violation on Friday, citing sources and information about what happened. The publication said that hackers stole hundreds of gigabytes of data, including several databases, from the European Commission’s account on the cloud giant Amazon Web Services. The hacker provided public proof of their access, including photos.
It was not immediately clear what types of data were stolen.
