Crusoe, a data center developer, is adding to its energy storage capacity by purchasing batteries from Form Energy and Redwood Energy.
The company said it will buy 12 gigawatts of Form Energy’s 100-hour batteries. It is the second major sale by Form, which last month said it would make a 30 gigawatt-hour battery for Google in Minnesota. That deal was priceless about $1 billionAccording to The Information.
Form, which did not disclose the price of the product, will start supplying Crusoe batteries in 2027.
Crusoe’s small acquisition should still bring in hundreds of millions of dollars as the battery company starts to generate $500 million in revenue. The form has raised $1.4 billion to date, according to PitchBook. In the past, Form has signed small contracts with organizations that want to test the technology.
In metal-air batteries, the metal discharge occurs when air from the air flows over the metal particles inside the battery. The oxidation process creates corrosion and electricity. To charge the battery, the electricity removes the corrosion, and releases the gas.
Form started expanding its first factory in West Virginia last year in anticipation of the big deals in the works.
Crusoe as well he announced to grow a partnership with Redwood Materialsa battery recycling and recycling company founded by former Tesla CTO JB Straubel. The data center company has been operating a 12 megawatt, 63 megawatt-hour battery on the microgrid since June, which was the second largest battery installation at the time. Redwood will provide an additional 8 megawatts of electricity using recycled EV batteries.
