latest Grey’s Anatomy Death feels deeply to us—and reminds us of past storylines.

Couples therapist Katie (played by Samantha mary ware) died at the end of Thursday’s episode. After battling cancer. Ware’s character recurred in Season 22 as one of general surgeon Miranda Bailey’s patients (Chandra Wilson) and resident Lucas Adams (Nico Tejo).
After a clinical trial initially helped Katie shrink her tumors, the company that funded the trial withdrew their participation. Katie then receives hospice care at the home of Lucas and Simon’s (Alexis Floyd) interns. (Lucas is Derek and Meredith’s nephew, and he moved into their house with his peers when he started living at Gray Sloan Memorial.)

“What if we had more time?” Katie asked Lucas as they lay in the hospital bed. “What if we met in college?”
Katie and Lucas set up a cute meet-and-greet so they could go on a date. (Since they actually met as doctor-patients, falling in love was not allowed.)
“I was an idiot in college, and all I did in medical school was study,” Lucas quipped. “We probably met in high school when I was here visiting my cousins. … Are you sure you weren’t at the football stadium or the movie theater?”

“I think I might be in the library,” he replied. “I was working on an English newspaper and I forgot my book at home. (Yes) beloved“.
Katie joked she had a “weak spot for boys who read books” Toni Morrison“novel.
“You offered to look it up for me because the librarian wouldn’t let me use my aunt’s card,” Lucas pretended. “We spent a whole week together just walking around the city and talking about books. … (We later went to) New York. You have your own therapy practice and I’m a researcher.”
Katie was breathing hard and gasping as she thought about finally making it to New York. Lucas rushed to get medical supplies to help, but it was too late.
When Lucas cries at Katie’s bedside after her deathalso left many fans stunned.
“I’m so sad they pulled Danny and Izzy again,” one fan wrote via X. “They have so much chemistry.”
Another viewer added, “Just end it now, I can’t do the Danny and Izzy situation anymore.”
Dr. Isobel “Izzy” StephensKatherine Heigl) fell especially in love with cardiothoracic patient Denny Duquette (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) in the middle of her 2005 second season internship. At the height of their secret romance, Danny was the second person to receive a heart transplant. To improve his standing on the donor list, Izzie had his L-VAD leads severed, leaving his current heart unstable.
While Izzy was on leave from the hospital, Danny got a new heart. He later died, leaving his entire multi-million dollar estate to Izzie. In grief, Izzy kept imagining Danny’s existence, and even Having sex with his ghost.
“I guess it was to give fans some wish fulfillment,” Heigl recalled of the sex scene in a March 2025 interview. Entertainment Weekly. “It’s awkward — not the scene, but the concept.”
She continued, “For me, I love Izzy and I want her to have something like this with Danny. So, there’s a part of me that loves it and wants to do it and wants to see her have it, even if it’s just a fantasy. But, because there’s a supernatural aspect to it, it’s not necessarily in the realm of reality.” Grey’s Anatomy“.
