DoorDash he announced Thursday that it is launching a new, autonomous “Tasks” program that will allow the company to pay its dispatchers to complete tasks they want to improve with AI and robotic systems. Deliveries will be able to earn money by completing tasks like recording daily tasks or recording them speaking a different language, DoorDash said.
“These tools help AI and robotics understand the world,” DoorDash wrote in a post. “Payment is shown up front and guaranteed based on the effort and difficulty of the job.”
Bloomberg reports that audio and video provided by employees will be used to evaluate the company’s internal AI models and those developed by stakeholders in the retail, insurance, hospitality, and technology sectors.
One example of the service is asking a messenger to take pictures of their hands washing at least five dishes while wearing a body camera, holding each clean dish for a few seconds before moving on to the next, Bloomberg reported.
DoorDash isn’t the only company that uses its employees to train AI models. Late last year, Uber announced plans to allow drivers to earn extra money by completing small tasks, such as uploading photos to help train AI models.
In addition to the Standalone Tasks app, dispatchers see new digital “Tasks” listed on the Dasher app. Examples include helping a restaurant to showcase its food by taking real pictures of its dishes or taking pictures of hotel entrances so that drivers can easily find the lowest price. DoorDash images partnership with Waymowhere dispatchers are paid to close the doors of self-driving cars, they are also listed in the program as a job.
“Tasks’ goal is to help more businesses understand what’s happening on the ground and gather new information, all while giving Dashers a new way to earn their money,” said Ethan Beatty, General Manager, DoorDash Tasks, in a blog post. “There are more than 8 million Dashers who can reach anywhere in the US and want to earn a steady income beyond shipping. This is a powerful ability to digitize the world.”
The in-app Tasks and standalone Tasks app are available in select US locations, except for California, New York City, Seattle, and Colorado. DoorDash plans to expand into more service types and countries in the future.
