He added: “Because of what they did against Iran, they started us with two wars in eight or nine months. Therefore, we cannot exist in such conditions.
Iran’s announcement came after the US president said Donald TrumpOn Tuesday, Iran was welcomed to participate in the tournament, during a meeting between Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
After the meeting, Mr. Infantino said: “This evening, I met with the President of the United States to discuss preparations for the upcoming World Cup. We also discussed the situation in Iran and the fact that the Iranian national team has been able to participate in the World Cup. During the discussion, Mr. Trump confirmed that the Iranian national team is welcome to compete in the United States.”
Iran was scheduled to play in Group G against Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand on America’s West Coast, home to nearly a million Iranian-Americans.
No country has ever withdrawn from the World Cup after reaching the age of 76, and the last time was in 1950 when India and France withdrew due to travel expenses in Brazil, according to Sky Sports.
