Go to bed with the intention of exercising tomorrow.
Then morning hits, and suddenly everything else feels more important.
This exact pattern came up in a recent coaching session I recorded with a Nerd Fitness reader named Charlie.
Below are three coaching takeaways from that conversation you can use today to avoid the comparison trap, build momentum, and reduce burnout at the beginning of the year.
Charlie has a pattern in many people: a few months of great consistency, followed by a complete drop-off.
Restarting feels brutal – not because they don’t know what to do, but because they are comparing themselves to a past peak.

Take away: Try using one accumulation goal (exactly what we set in the Nerd Fitness Challenge.)
Every workout is a victory in itself, not a verdict on your past performance.
Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.
Mornings are tough for Charlie, especially early in the day before his focus comes online. They go to bed at night planning to train in the morning, but when the moment arrives, everything else seems more attractive.

Take away: Consistency often isn’t about trying harder – it’s about trying remove friction.
Sometimes the best move is to make it a habit easier to starteven if it seems a bit unconventional.
Charlie does great with systems at work – but resists them at home. Mornings feel like “me time,” and rigid rules cause pushback.
.VIDEO: WHY THE RULES DON’T WORK FOR EVERYONE.
Take away: For some people, consistency comes from options with consequences, no rigid rules.
Instead of:
“I have to do this.”
Become:
“Here are my options – and what each choice brings.”
This small change preserves autonomy and makes it more likely to follow through.
Before you close this email, take a moment to think about this:
What is one small adjustment you are willing to try this week?
It might be something you heard in my coaching session with Charlie, or something that came up for you as the year went on.
Treat it as an experiment. Try it. Notice what happens.
If you want to answer and tell me what you test, I’d love to hear it.
