Bridgerton replaces Penelope as Lady Whistledown in major book changes

She’s no longer that powerless girl who needed Whistledown to take back her voice,” showrunner Jess Brownell told Tudum of the decision. “While she firmly believes that gossip is information and gossip is the power of the voiceless, she realizes it’s time to stop playing that role.”

“Penelope is Julia Quinn’s Whistledown, so we knew we couldn’t really play with that reveal for too long because people could Google it,” she added. “But now, we can meet our audience’s expectations.”

Brownell hints at how to reorganize will influence seasons to come, she said: “Starting with Genevieve in series one, to Penelope as Lady Whistledown, and now seeing Sophie as the maid, it was really key for us to explore the lives of these working women at a time when there were so few choices and agency for women.”

She concluded: “It broadens the experience of women on the show by showing that there are women who aren’t just content with what’s handed to them but are doing their best to make their position more secure.”

While the first season unveiled Penelope as Lady Whistledown, Brownell has chosen not to reveal who is behind the current scandal. Some popular fan theories include Hyacinthus (Florence Hunt) or Eloise (Claudia Jesse).

Bridgerton is no stranger to changes in the books since it premiered in 2020. Season 1 centers on Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon Bassett (Léger-Jean Page), the protagonist of the first book, The Duke and I.
