“I can promise everyone in the audience, no one is more disappointed than me. No one is crying more than me. No one is more heartbroken,” Wahlberg, 56, told EXCLUSIVELY US Weekly. “I did everything I could to save the blue bloods. I did everything I could.”
He dreamed of a spin-off series for his cop character Danny Regan, but I didn’t expect this to happen:
“I once thought about taking Danny to a completely different, far away place,” he said.

Is it easy to join Boston Blue?
I had to go through the process of saying goodbye to our crew and cast and coming to terms with the fact that Blue Bloods might now be in my rearview mirror. I had to give up on Danny Regan and Blue Bloods. So when this question came up, I had to reevaluate. This wasn’t just a hasty decision.
it becomes an easier decision When I started working on the pilot script With the Brandons (creators Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier). I tried to find ways to make Danny feel real, to make it reasonable for him to go to Boston, and to find ways to make Danny actually be a fish out of water.
Is it difficult to play a character you know so well in a new setting?
The challenge of playing Danny in a new world made me enjoy the character even more. Yeah, Danny moved to Boston and they all had different accents and everyone was going to be against the Yankees. It takes more than just being a tough New Yorker to move to Boston and argue with everyone about what’s better.
It’s giving up the driver’s seat and sitting in the passenger seat. He is a guest at someone else’s table.
It always comes back to the table!
He must learn to conduct conversation more politely. What Danny had to adapt to, Donnie had to adapt to. If I accept these challenges, I’ll create more interesting characters. If I don’t do this, I’ll probably be bored in 15 years.
Did you always know faith would be an aspect of the show?
It’s important for everyone to have faith be a part of the show. This faith is different from Danny’s Catholic upbringing, but we still get to see his upbringing, and I think that’s really important as well. It’s not that the Reagans sat around the table and said thanks, but the fact that it still exists is — to me — just as important. Especially in terms of faith, it showed me more about Danny and Sean’s faith that even though they were hundreds of miles away, they still respected Reagan’s legacy. They didn’t give up on it. They stuck to it, respecting the traditions of this new family while also respecting their own. The Reagans are still going on now, even though they’re not in New York.
You can look at that because they don’t respect their beliefs the way the blue bloods do. Or you can see how I chose them to respect it more.

It was a very layered conversation. Andrew is a guy in the class. I called and spoke with him before making this decision and he was very sweet, friendly and supportive. He is willing to do whatever it takes to help find the right person. We even joked that he changed his appearance Dive into Boston Blue Play the bad guy or do something different. He is so kind. I really admire his class.
It was a hard decision – certainly for me – and one of the ones that left me unsure about whether to do this show. It was like, “How do we do this with different characters?” I have to say, Mika did it with the same grace and elegance that Andrew did. Micah has a lot of respect for Andrew. He stepped into the role very carefully, cautiously, and took his time. He thought deeply about how to play the character.
Fans have a lot of ideas for the recast.
People’s disappointment with this decision tells me they haven’t seen the show, or they’re also disappointed that Blue Bloods is gone. I can assure every viewer that no one is more disappointed than me. No one cried more than me. No one’s heart is more broken than mine. I did everything I could to save the blue bloods. I’ve done everything I can, and now that we’re getting into this, I’m going to do my best for this show in the same way.
If anyone hasn’t fully come to terms with Sean’s transformation, watch the midseason premiere. This is my favorite episode so far. I admire Micah for taking on this challenge and the way he handled it. I like his work. I think both versions of Sean off-screen are two amazing people, and I give them a huge amount of praise for the way they handled this change.
We’ve already seen cameos from Blue Bloods like Bridget Moyna and Marissa Ramirez. Are there more fun surprises?
It was so much fun to do it with the Blue Bloods cast. We know this show stands on the shoulders of that show. We knew that, so everyone had a lot of respect for the original cast and the original show. Some episodes are significant, such as Ryan Kallio’s episode. Sometimes I have to hold myself back from crying. I literally cried when Ryan aka Grandpa met May and Lena. I cried when they said the scene stopped. It’s fun to have people come back.
We still have many ideas. Hopefully at some point we’ll have everyone come visit us – sometimes even multiple times. Baez has a few episodes left this season, and I know people will be curious about how it ends. Most people will be very happy with what the future holds. There’s a lot of opportunities and hopefully a lot of seasons for people to come back and try something and figure out the right way to do it – rather than rushing into it just for the sake of doing it.
How about new faces, like your wife Jenny McCarthy?
Jenny and I have discussed it. We all discussed what she might do on the show. What most people don’t know is that she was invited to join the Blue Bloods when we first started dating episode We decided it was best not to do this. We don’t want to distract the audience with this. But going forward, we talked about her being Sean’s nurse, and then she caught Danny’s attention. But Sean didn’t stay in the hospital for long…so Jenny was definitely willing to do something.
she and Sonequa Martin-Green We became very close, so they were talking about ideas. Every time Jenny and I FaceTime, Sonequa says something like, “Come on, we need you on the show. I always need you here.” It makes my heart so happy. But I think my nephews are also interested in role playing. They are actors, we have Oscar, Jeffrey and Brandon. They all do very well in their own right. Is there a world that I end up twisting Mark (Wahlberg)arm for an episode? perhaps. It depends on the script, but anything is possible.
That’s the joy of working with this group of writers now. Specifically, the Brandons… I told them on Monday that I was on the phone with (the Boston Celtics) Jaylen Brown He said, “Get me on the show.” I told our EP and they wrote a scene while I sat next to them. This is how we deal with this problem. We are not free to do anything at any given time. But they’re very open to experimenting, and it’s really just about making sure that we’re doing things the right way and making sure that we’re providing the best value to our audience.
It’s also realizing that we can take our time and not have to force all these things on the audience. We can stretch it out and keep surprising them with twists and turns they don’t expect.
You can feel the love poured into the show for its fans.
There are still some Blue Bloods viewers who are grappling with the fact that the show isn’t airing. Trust me, I know. But I invite them to give our show a chance and see how we can bring Blue Bloods into it, look for nods, winks, homages and homages. There are many of them. When Danny is on the phone be aware of who he may be talking to. What did he see in the text message? There are Easter eggs scattered everywhere. To me, it was so fun to have them out there. Blue Bloods fans have a blast. Those who watch our show enjoy it too.
