The creators of Dark Sky, who sold their popular weather app at Apple in March 2020, they will come back with a new adaptation of the weather. The group recently announced the launch of their new app, Acme Weatherwhich they claim provides better and more reliable predictions than what they had in Dark Sky. The app will also provide a number of special weather alerts, including fun ones like rainbow alerts and beautiful sunsets.
Unlike conventional weather software, Acme Weather’s weather forecast is supplemented with various forecasts for better accuracy.

Dark Sky co-founder Adam Grossman explains in the introduction blog post that the program’s domestic forecasts will improve different weather forecasting models, satellites, ground station observations, and radar data, which make his predictions more reliable.
However, the program will also have additional prediction lines that show other possible outcomes as gray lines on its screen.

“Forecasting is often wrong — it’s the weather, right? It’s one of the hardest things to predict,” Grossman told TechCrunch via phone interview. “And our biggest peeve with a lot of weather programs is that you’re just guessing, and you don’t know how accurate they are.”
Understanding alternatives helps people prepare for big events, he said.
“I see that it is very useful for storms, where, maybe the storm starts in the morning, and you are going to snow, but maybe there is also the possibility that it will happen a little later – until the evening – in which the rain,” Gross explained. “Just being able to see that on a timeline just gives you a pretty good idea of how, are all the patterns consistent, and you’re starting to snowball?”
This type of data can create an important product, not only for consumers, but also for other manufacturers.
At Dark Sky, the team offered its weather API to developers. After being acquired by Apple, the group worked on the creative process WeatherKitcreative tools that provide access to Apple’s weather forecast by subscription. Grossman said the team has not yet decided whether the building API will be part of Acme Weather.
In fact, Acme Weather is a $25-a-year program to purchase, with a two-week free trial. This helps offset the costs involved in pulling in different types of weather and thingswhich can be expensive.
“A lot of our time has been spent on making our own predictions – our data provider, in a way. And that allows us to do things like make multiple predictions … (and) create any map we want, instead of relying on a third-party map provider,” Grossman said.
At launch, the app offers a variety of maps, including radar, lightning, rain and snow, as well as wind, temperature, humidity, cloud cover, and storm tracks.
Another feature, Community Reports, allows users to share information about their current situation to improve the app’s real-time reporting.

While Dark Sky has become a favorite weather app for its ability to predict when the rain will start falling in your area, Acme Weather wants to fix that and have fun.
The app contains information about regular events, such as rainfall, nearby lightning, community reports, government-issued severe weather alerts, and more. Also try alerts like rainbow predictions or predicting when you’ll see a beautiful sunset.
This will be available in the special “Acme Labs” section of the program, and Grossman said he will be careful with his predictions, because of the difficulties.

Users will also be able to customize their alerts to look at weather conditions they care about, such as wind or UV indices, or the possibility of rain in the next 24 hours.
The ability to try new ideas is part of what drew the team back to the indie app, Grossman said.
“I really like Apple… but as a big company, it’s hard to try amazing, new, experimental ideas. If you have a billion users, mistakes are expensive,” he tells TechCrunch. “There’s a lot of programming time, there’s a lot of people involved, the idea of being able to try a lot of things, I think, is exciting.”
Acme Weather is available for iOS. Android version is fixed.
The team is bootstrapped and includes co-founders Josh Reyes and Dan Abrutynalso in the past of Dark Sky. The small staff includes both former members of the Dark Sky team and new recruits.
