Olympians send ‘love and hugs’ to skater who cut face during competition


Polish Olympic speed skater Camilla Sellier is sending a positive message to the U.S. Christine Santos Griswold Santos Griswold accidentally cut Sellier’s face with a razor blade during a game 2026 Winter Olympics.

“Hey everyone, it’s come to my attention that @kristensantos has received a lot of messages blaming her for this accident. I kindly ask you not to place any blame on her,” Celier, 25, posted via her Instagram Stories Sunday, February 22nd. “What happened is no one’s fault. It’s the nature of our sport – it comes with inherent risks and I’m fully aware of them every time I step on the ice.”

She continued, “Remember, accidents can happen, but no one wants to let that happen. Let’s support each other instead of blaming each other. Let’s choose kindness over hate.”

The incident occurred during the women’s 1500m race on Friday, February 20, when Sellier collided with 31-year-old Santos Griswold on the ice. When the two collided, Santos-Griswold’s blade cut Sellier’s eye. The scary moment it gets bloody.

After receiving treatment, Sellier was taken off the ice on a stretcher. The athletes gave a thumbs up to the stunned crowd as they exited the field.

Santos-Griswold was penalized for illegal lane overtaking, causing an accident and she was ruled out of the race.

“@kristensantos, I’m sending you lots of love and hugs,” Sellier posted on Sunday. “I know this isn’t easy for you either.”

Santos-Griswold responded to Sellier’s message her own Instagram accountforwarded Sellier’s letter and thanked her for her kind words.

“Camila, your kindness and strength are beyond my words,” Santos Griswold wrote. “As soon as I realized her face had been cut by my blade, I went straight to her to get it checked out. Such is the respect we have for each other as competitors and people. I would never intentionally put her in harm’s way and I am so grateful for her kindness and understanding.”

She continued: “Short track speed skating is fast and unpredictable. We know the risks every time we step on the ice. Thank you for reminding everyone of this and for choosing grace in difficult circumstances.”

The American concluded his statement by wishing Sellier a speedy recovery.

Sellier is still recovering from her injuries and appears to be in good spirits. Post updates A post from the hospital on Instagram on Saturday, February 21st. In the post, Sellier is seen smiling as he lies in a hospital bed wearing a hospital gown. In the selfie, she made a heart-shaped gesture with her thumb and index finger.

“I know one day when I see this photo I will be reminded that I am stronger than I thought,” Sellier wrote on Instagram, along with a selfie from a hospital bed. “Thank you everyone for your support.”

She continued, “(I) just wanted to let you know I’m doing great.”
