Snap has big plans to release a new version of its AR glasses, the Specs, later this year. Despite the importance of what the hardware represents, the company recently let go of one of the project managers, who reportedly clashed with Snap CEO Evan Spiegel.
The tech blog Sources report first that the company recently lost Scott Myers, its SVP of Specs, due to a “burst” with Spiegel.
When contacted by TechCrunch, a Snap spokesperson said Myers “has decided to resign from Snap.” The statement thanked him for his contributions, and wished him “the best in his next chapter.” The spokesperson also denied the “explosion” but did not reveal details about Myers’ departure.
The spokesperson added: “We can’t wait to bring Specs to the world later this year. We are focused on strategic execution and long-term value creation for our partners, community and shareholders.”
It’s unclear when Myers left the company, or what the alleged “explosion” may have been about. When an X user asked Sources writer Alex Heath about the nature of the alleged conflict, he replied that it was “way,” he added without revealing details.
Snap has teased the commercial release of the Specs for a while and, in recent months, has shown it’s growing big on the launch of the product. In January, the company he left the Specs team in its subsidiary, Specs Inc., saying the move would allow for “a greater focus on operations and alignment.”
Myers joined the Snap team in 2020 and, before that, worked at SpaceX, Apple, and Nokia, according to His LinkedIn history. In interview with Tom’s Guide last summer, Myers called Specs’ development process “a new paradigm” and discussed the challenges of getting its features right. “I don’t want to see people wearing wires sticking out of the back of their heads,” he said with a laugh.
