India has 100M users of ChatGPT every week, Sam Altman says

India has 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, making the country one of the largest OpenAI markets in the world, CEO Sam Altman said ahead of a government-run AI conference.

On Sunday, Altman explained ChatGPT’s growth in India in a news release printed in the Indian English daily Times of India, as OpenAI plans to participate in the five-day India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, starting Monday. Altman is attend the ceremony along with senior executives from several of the world’s leading AI companies.

Expansion comes as OpenAI, like other leading AI companiesis targeting India’s youth and over one billion internet users to drive global growth. Indian government initiatives such as the IndiaAI Mission – a national program aimed at increasing computing skills, supporting startups and advancing the adoption of AI in public services – aim to address these gaps. However, a price-sensitive global market and infrastructure problems have made financing and delivering large projects more difficult than in developed economies.

“Given India’s size, it also risks losing the opportunity to democratize AI in emerging markets around the world,” Altman wrote, warning that the lack of adoption opportunities could focus the economic benefits of AI in the hands of a few.

Altman also indicated that OpenAI plans to expand its partnership with the Indian government, noting that the company recently announced a new partnership aimed at expanding access to AI across the country. He did not provide specifics, but said the focus will be on expanding the reach and helping more people use AI tools.

The India AI Impact Summit is expected to draw a diverse group of global technology and political leaders, including CEO of Anthropic Dario Amodei, Sundar Photosi of Google, and Indian businessmen such as Mukesh Ambani and Nandan Nilekani. Political leaders including Emmanuel Macron, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva are also expected to attend, reflecting India’s desire to position itself as a player at the center of the global AI debate.

For international AI companies, including OpenAI, the conference highlights how India’s large user base is translating to impacting how technology evolves.
