The actor shares that his kids feel complete after marrying his wife Kimberly VanderBeek In October 2021, they welcomed their sixth child, Jeremiah.
“He’s truly a blessing,” actor Tell people An interview conducted in November 2022 but published following his death on Friday, February 13.
“I mean, it sounds weird, but when he came, we really just thought, ‘Oh my gosh, how are we going to exist without him?’ It’s crazy because we had five kids before that,” James, who died on Wednesday, February 11, after a battle with stage 3 colorectal cancer, told the media at the time.
He added, “But the fact that he’s a boy is so healing for us, given everything we’ve been through before him.”
Except for Jeremiah, James and Kimberly share Olivia, 15, Joshua, 13, Annabelle, 12, Amelia, 9, and Gwendolyn, 7. The couple also suffered miscarriages in 2019 and 2020 before welcoming “rainbow baby” Jeremiah.
“He supported the family in such a beautiful way. The girls doted on him. My son was like a brother to me. Yeah, this is this amazing happy little king trophy boy who got everything he wanted,” James continued. “And not be afraid to ask for it.”

James described the past 12 months as “the hardest year of my life” and said the cancer had thrown his view of himself into chaos.
“When I was younger, I used to define myself as an actor, which was never that satisfying. Then I became a husband, which was better. Then I became a father, and that’s the ultimate,” he explained, adding that he considered himself a “loving, capable, strong, supportive husband, father, provider, steward of the land.”
James said he began to question his purpose when he became physically unable to perform some of those duties due to illness.
“This year, I had to face my own mortality. I came face to face with death,” he continued. “All the definitions that I cared about so much were stripped away. I was away in therapy, so I could no longer be a husband who helped my wife. I could no longer be a father who could pick up my kids, put them to bed and be there for them.”
James ends the video by sharing his conclusion that despite his changed life circumstances, he still deserves self-love.
November 2025 James reflects again Celebrating his “difficult year” and expressing gratitude to his wife, children and other loved ones for their unwavering support throughout his difficult health journey.
“I am more grateful than ever to my super wife who performs on levels I never imagined possible. She shows me what unconditional love is and the magic that comes from it. I am in awe of you, @vanderkimberly,” he wrote on Instagram at the time.
Turning her attention to the couple’s children, Van Der Beek continued: “Of course, I’m so grateful to this little army of blondes who keep me in the moment, active, and inspired because of you. I love you.”
