A walk to support California billionaires didn’t exactly draw a large crowd on Saturday – The San Francisco Chronicle read about a dozen attendees, along with another dozen tongue-in-cheek critics.
To be fair, designer Derik Kauffman was he predicted in advance that the attendance would be “just a few dozen”. But the misguided idea of a “March for Billionaires” has sparked a huge backlash on social media. And according to the Local Missionthe media almost overwhelmed the demonstrators at the event itself, where marchers carried signs with messages such as “We ❤️ You Jeffrey Bezos” and “It’s very difficult to write a non-partisan argument on a sign.”
The apparent reason for the protests was opposition to the Billionaire Tax Act, a state ballot measure that would require Californians with more than $1 billion to pay a one-time, 5% tax on their total wealth. If the measure passes, Governor Gavin Newsom said will oppose.
Kauffman, the founder of AI startup RunRL and not a billionaire himself, told reporters, “California is, I believe, the only state that offers health insurance to illegal immigrants. I think maybe we shouldn’t offer that.” (Fourteen states providing health care to undocumented immigrants.)
