Meta is testing the Vibes app on its own, the company confirmed to TechCrunch on Thursday. Established last September, The vibes it allows you to create and share local AI-generated videos and access a dedicated feed that features AI videos from others.
Think TikTok or Instagram Reels, but every video you get is created by AI. Until now, the feed has been in the Meta AI program. By making Vibes available outside of the Meta AI program, the company is positioning itself as a direct competitor to Sora, an AI-powered animation developed by OpenAI is a public domain software which was soon followed by Vibes.
“Following the strong momentum of Vibes within Meta AI, we are testing an autonomous program to take it even further,” Meta said in an email. “We’ve seen that users are leaning more towards creating, finding, and sharing AI-generated videos with friends. The standalone app provides a dedicated home for it, giving people a stable and immersive environment. We’ll look to grow the app based on what we learn from the community.”

Meta says it won’t share exact numbers but says Vibes has been successful, Meta AI usage has continued to grow since its launch, which it believes needs a standalone app.
The chief technology expert also notes that as users interact with Meta AI content, the automated software allows for greater focus on design and engagement.
Vibes allows users to create a video from scratch or edit a video they see on their feed. Before printing, you can add new images, layer in music, and change styles. You can post the video directly to the Vibes feed, DM to others, or post to Instagram and Facebook Stories and Reels.
Meta says collaboration and sharing are growing, with more Vibes videos being sent to friends, which the company says shows how people are using Reels.
It is worth noting that Meta told TechCrunch last week that, in addition to testing new subscriptions on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, it will investigate subscriptions for AI products, including Vibes.
Although Vibes has been free since launch, Meta plans to offer free access to Vibes video creation, with a subscription option to unlock additional video creation opportunities each month. Meta plans to launch these trial subscriptions in the coming months.
