NASA astronauts can now bring their phones with them on their lunar missions

Get ready for out-of-this-world selfies. NASA astronauts will be allowed to bring their phones into space for the first time, starting with the Crew-12 and Artemis II missions.

Crew-12 is expected to go to the International Space Station next weekwhile the much-anticipated project of Artemis II – which will bringing people around the moon for the first time since the 1960s – it was delayed until March.

“We’re giving our crews tools to capture special family moments and share inspiring photos and videos around the world,” NASA administrator Jared Isaacman said. he wrote on X.

With the latest iPhones and Android devices close at hand, crews will be able to sit back and collect photos and videos, meaning that for us back home, these upcoming missions could be some of NASA’s most well-documented missions yet.

Imagine how cool it would be (or fun) if astronauts turned themselves into TikTok stars in zero gravity, or if they took super selfies in space. For those who work in government, it is interesting, of course, that NASA agreed to change the law so quickly.

“Importantly, we challenged long-standing methods and modern analytical tools to allow for faster time-to-broadcasting,” Isaacman wrote. “This acceleration will serve NASA well as we pursue valuable science and research in orbit and the moon.”

It’s understandable that it can be difficult to approve new technology to go into space – if one small thing goes wrong, the space shuttle can go awry. Until now, the new cameras that had to go to these services were Nikon DSLRs and GoPros of the decade, according to Ars Technica. This is not fiction, but there is something familiar and exciting about using a smartphone.

This is not the first time that phones have had it go to space. SpaceX allowed its phones special astronaut missions.
