OpenAI introduces a new version of coding just minutes after Anthropic downloads its own

On Monday, OpenAI launched Codexa coding tool marketed to programmers. Today, OpenAI launched a new version designed to turbo-charge Codex: GPT-5.3 code.

The company says the version transforms Codex from an agent that can “write and review code” to one that can “do everything that developers and engineers do on the computer, expanding who can develop software and how it works.” After testing its new model against a wide range of functions, OpenAI says it can create “more complex games and apps from scratch.”

OpenAI claims that the GPT-5.3 Codex is also 25 percent faster than its previous model (GPT-5.2) and that it was the first model of the company that “supported automation,” meaning that the company’s employees used the original software of the program to self-destruct and analyze its performance.

The release of the new model follows hot on the heels of a new agetic coding model released by its competitor, Anthropic. Indeed, OpenAI and Anthropic originally planned to release their two writing tools at the same time: 10 am PST. However, shortly after the release, Anthropic moved up its release date by 15 minutes, narrowly beating OpenAI in the bidding competition.
