The Internet Archive is a non-profit that – as you might expect – is dedicated to preserving the Internet and preserving digital content for future generations. This week, the platform announced a new tool designed to expand the service by helping WordPress users around the world put their posts on the digital stage.
The Archive’s Wayback Machinewhich directs the Internet through common images, has partnered with Automattic, the the company behind WordPress. Together, the two organizations have launched a new WordPress plugin – Link Fixer – designed to combat the scourge of “link rot.”
“Link rot” is an unfortunate phenomenon in which web pages are littered with broken links – URLs that used to lead to sites that used to work but now return error or failure messages. A Pew Research from 2024 showed that about 40% of the links that existed in 2013 were no longer active. Such “digital destruction” occurs on a variety of sites, from news and government websites to Wikipedia pages to tweets.
Emergency he says that His new plugin works by scanning your WordPress posts for outbound links, then crawling the Wayback Machine’s cache of those links. If there is none, it will only fetch new images for the articles in question. When a linked page is not available online, the new interface will redirect readers to the cached versions, so there is no downtime. The device also keeps records of the user, which helps ensure their longevity.
This tool is designed to make the website visitors read the best website available. Indeed, Automattic’s plug-in continuously checks for web links, and if the original web link is revived, the plug-in will redirect the user to the original web page instead of the archived one.
A write on Github It shows that the plug-in controls are easy to control and offer easy customization. For example, users can specify how often they want the plugin to scan a link for confirmation (the default provided by the app is every three days).
