Just accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award, Cher Looking eager and ready to float off stage grammy awards 2026 — until the host Trevor Noah Call her back.
“Cher, before you go…can we have you announce the nominees? I can do that…but I have no track record,” Noah, 41, quipped At the star-studded awards ceremony Held on Sunday, February 1st at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
“You can see I want to leave the stage,” she joked as she returned to the microphone.
The 79-year-old pop icon paused and smiled as the crowd laughed, leaning in for an awkward moment before introducing the record of the year nominees.
A montage was played showing the artists receiving awards: bad bunny, Sabrina Carpenter, Dojiyi, billie eilish, Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar and Shenzhen Aviation Association, chapel roan and Rose and Bruno Mars.
“The Grammy Award went to…oh, they told me it was will appear on the prompter,” she said, then tightened her lips with her hand and looked down at the envelope. “Oh, the Grammy Award goes to Luther Vandross! ” she declared.
Although she mentioned the late singer’s name, she meant “Luther,” produced by Lamar and SZA Jack Antonoff and Yabo. The song samples Vandross and Cheryl Lynn1982 duet “If This World Were Mine.”

“First, let’s pay tribute to the late, great Luther Vandross,” he said, before Lamar noted that Vandross was one of his “favorite” artists “ever.”
Viewers seemed to notice and have fun with Cher’s slip-up, with viewers taking to social media.
“Oh that pathetically confused lady, bless your heart, Cher,” one person wrote. “Someone check on Cher…” echoed another. “Cher had no idea she had to work tonight #GRAMMYs2026,” a third quipped. “Cher doesn’t know what’s going on, and that’s okay,” said a fourth voice.
“Congratulations to Kendrick Lamar and SZA for resurrecting Luther Vandross so Cher can let us know he won!” wrote one fifth.
While many rejoiced at Cher’s misfortune, others rallied to her defense. “C’mon Cher did her best, she’s a legend. People make mistakes, give it a rest. People just wish they were as popular (and) talented as her,” one person wrote.
When Noah resumed hosting duties, he joked, “I love live TV.”
Meanwhile, many fans celebrated Cher’s huge achievement. The “Believe” hitmaker got standing ovation But she told the crowd to sit down as she spoke.
“I knew what I wanted to be when I was five years old, I was famous by the time I was 19, and I actually had the highest-rated show in my 20s,” Cher said. “But I had no idea how difficult my career was going to be, how difficult my life was going to be. I’m not saying, ‘Oh, poor me,’ but whatever. I was either a loser or won an Oscar. I’m sure a lot of viewers know what I’m talking about.”
“What I want to tell you, is the only thing I want you to take away, and I’ve been in this business forever,” she continued. “No matter what happens, never give up on your dreams. Live in the moment and let it be, and even if it doesn’t happen now, it will soon. So that’s all I have to say. Thank you.”
