murderous behavior Brian Koberg As images from court documents continue to be released in Idaho, they stir up new heartache that continues to haunt the families of the four victims.
Recently, Idaho officials released a forensic report containing previously unreleased details. In it, medical examiners detailed how Kohberger killed all four University of Idaho students in late 2022.
US Weekly The decision was made not to report these horrific details because they were too horrific in nature.
Steve Goncalveswho is the victim’s father Kelly Gonsalvesappears in Jesse Weber Live Simply put, the families of murdered students are often the last to know, he said on NewsNation on Tuesday, Jan. 27.
“We learned something completely new,” Gonsalves said of the latest public documents. “The details contained in these documents were never provided to us. Before being provided to us, they were provided to strangers.”
Goncalves, 50, added: “It’s shocking that the family was not given any priority, you know? Not even a tip. We asked for discovery. They said they would give it to us, but they never did.”
Kohberger, 31, killed University of Idaho student Goncalves, 21, Maddie Morgantwenty one, Shana Knodel20 and Ethan Chapin20, at the off-campus home they shared in Moscow.
On November 13, 2022, Koberg sneaked into the house under cover of darkness and stabbed four students to death. In August 2025, Koberg admitted to killing the students and was sentenced to life imprisonment.
In recent weeks, officials have released redacted, since-deleted, crime scene photos showing blood splatters on walls and doors and blood on the floor. There also appeared to be cuts on one of the mattresses, with true crime enthusiasts speculating on social media that they were caused by Koberg’s knife.
In an interview with Weber, Goncalves questioned why these extremely detailed documents needed to be shared with the public.
Gonsalves said Koberg “conducted pleas in four murder or capital cases, while at the same time waiving his right to even challenge them.” “So, you know what? Why do these need to be released? You know, all these details? I mean, these are like funeral home details. This has nothing to do with a case that will never happen.”
Goncalves said “we had no idea” the new document was coming. “We had no warning, no warning. It was in the media before us, which was too bad. We just found out, you know, our phones started shutting off.”
Goncalves said the families have been meeting with state lawmakers “to try to resolve this” issue. He said Idaho House Bill 1135 was introduced and enacted to “protect this information and ensure it is never disclosed.”
Goncalves said the families “are going to talk to the governor and say, ‘Hey, we can do better.'” You know, that means we have to (enact) laws. We can’t just have one person play judge and jury, get a (plea) deal, and then, you know, spend the rest of our lives like this, and six months later we discover new details about the worst moments of our children’s lives. You know, it seems like a nightmare, there’s no way this could be illegal, but we want to make sure that in the future it’s not legal in Idaho. “
