Amazon is closing its Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh stores

RIP, Amazon stores: they’re gone and probably soon to be forgotten.

Amazon he announced Tuesday that it will close its brick-and-mortar Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh stores and instead expand its same-day sales capabilities, as well as its Whole Foods Market.

It is not surprising that Amazon will leave its retail stores, since Amazon did cut down in its retail availability over the past few years. After closing some stores in 2024, an Amazon spokesperson said the company “will not be able to make the economy work with the cost of rent.”

Amazon isn’t leaving the brick-and-mortar side of its business, though. Instead, it acknowledges the fact that people have a stronger connection to Whole Foods Market than Amazon Go stores.

Amazon will open more than 100 Whole Foods stores over the next few years. The company says Whole Foods has seen sales growth of more than 40% and expanded to 550 stores since it was purchased by Amazon in 2017.
