The Game Maker Conference 2026 is set to go global this year if comments on social networking sites like LinkedIn are any indication.
Many members of the international sports community have announced they will skip the event, largely due to security concerns, strict US immigration laws, and a heavy presence by Customs Enforcement. Developers, who have previously attended GDC, and other industry experts have gone to platforms like LinkedIn express their concerns openly.
ICE incidents in several US cities and the recent shooting in Minneapolis involving ICE agents have added to the concern. Renee Nicole Good was killed on January 7, and ICU nurse Alex Pretti lost her life on January 24. Many travelers also expressed concern about unexpected border searches and security concerns.
As one person said, “It’s not worth the risk of going.” Another responded: “The US is a very difficult place to host international events.”
GDC, now renamed “GDC Games Festival,” is scheduled to take place in San Francisco from March 9 to 13.
Others cited safety and cost concerns as reasons not to attend. Indie producers and small studios have reported that costs, which include hotel, food, travel, and ticket prices, are too high.
In response to this, GDC President Nina Brown said Mobilegamer.bizthat “the safety of our community will always be our top priority.” In a statement, Brown said the GDC works closely with “local officials and legal experts to monitor changes in US policy” and provide up-to-date guidance. Brown also advised expats to start applying for their visas early and check with their embassies about any special requirements.

Brown also outlined several security measures, including that the GDC provides a 24/7 security number, security training for conference staff, and security escorts upon request. San Francisco’s Safety Community Ambassadors program will also be on hand, providing additional assistance to those attending the event.
TechCrunch has also reached out to GDC for comment and will update this article if the organization responds.
On the price front, GDC has it be explained an easy, affordable way to make tickets so the event can reach small producers and indie studios. The new Festival Pass replaces the previous All-Access pass and is 45% cheaper, with prices starting at $649 and giving access to all major programs.
