“People online were saying it was a ‘crazy weight loss’ (for the fight) and stuff like that,” he admits. “I really didn’t lose a lot of weight for this race. My times were pretty low, but even over the course of the week, I didn’t lose a lot of weight.”
The MMA fighter admitted, “I’m not entirely sure what happened and I’m going to have more tests and stuff over the next few weeks to find out. For all the people saying I must have done crazy (weight) cuts or something, I lost very, very little weight.”
Smotherman predicted he “hopes to be back soon” because he feels “totally fine.” He then apologized to his intended opponent, Ricky Tusiosdue to the cancellation of their fight at UFC 324.
mixed martial arts fighter Cody Steele responded to Smotherman’s health update and offered some encouragement, writing: “I’m glad you’re okay bro.”
UFC veteran Matt Quick Called Smotherman a “champion” among mixed martial artists Alex Perez shared a “praying hands emoji” in the comments.
“Hope you’re recovering well and can’t wait to see you back,” one fan wrote to Smotherman, with another chiming in, “I thought you weren’t going to stand up bro but you showed your character.”
The UFC has not yet clarified whether Smotherman’s fight with Turcios will be rescheduled for a later date.
Smotherman vs. Turcios was scheduled to take place on the undercard of an event Justin Sledger be opposed to Paddy Pimblett in a fight for the interim UFC lightweight title. Paramount+ airs UFC 234 live from T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada on Saturday.
Known professionally as “The Babyface Killer,” Smotherman is considered a rising star in the mixed martial arts world. He has participated before Dana White’s Contender Series Fighting in a bantamweight bout in August 2023 Charalampos Grigoriou, He lost by TKO in less than a minute.
The boxer went on to win his UFC fight night debut vs. Jack Hadley Unanimous decision in October 2024. Smotherman, who will face Tutsios in the now-canceled fight, has a career record of 12-6-0.
