‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Kim Raver Talks Directing Ellen Pompeo and Scott Speedman

“I just love it. I feel so lucky to have the incredible Debbie Allen as a mentor, and every time I direct another episode, I learn more,” Raver, 56, who plays Teddy, exclusively told US Weekly Her latest episode will air on Thursday, January 22. “I have an incredible crew and this cast is great.”

The episode is titled “Fortunate Son” and follows Richard (James Pickens Jr.) because he “continues to take control of his health.” Meanwhile, Meredith (Pompeo) and Nick (Speedman) Nick comes to visit Estranged sisters from Boston.

“I got to get to know (the three main characters in this episode) very, very deeply, and then the interns. Especially James Pickens Jr.), who openly admits that he has managed prostate cancer. This storyline is centered around Richard – he’s vulnerable and telling this story. The audience is going to be riveted and moved,” Raver teased. “And there’s a cliffhanger. I think it’s going to be really surprising because it’s great. We love cliffhangers.”

Laffer continued: “Ellen is amazing, her and Scott – their chemistry and storylines are great. Audiences will be drawn to their stories as well. I love getting to tell these stories from a director’s perspective every day.”

“Each storyline gave us a typical Grey’s Anatomy vibe, you’ll cry, you’ll laugh, the residents are great. There’s a lot of mischief going on with them. It’s a really exciting show,” she continued. “I feel like I learn more every time I direct a new episode of Grey’s Anatomy because there’s a different format or a different way to shoot it.”

Reflecting on the learning curve, Raver added, “But I think maybe my confidence in how to tell the story and where I wanted to put the camera[has gotten better]. Television moves so fast, so I feel like the more I do it, the more comfortable I get with the speed it takes to get it done. I’m just getting more and more comfortable with the craft of it, which allows me to really enjoy the process.”

Raver also teased What Grey’s Anatomy Fans can look forward to it Remainder of Season 22. “A couple scripts came in[recently]and I was like, ‘Oh, my God.'” It got chaotic and very Grey’s Anatomy -like. I love it so much,” she joked.

She concluded: “We were all reading about what was going on[during the table reading]and I loved that. Some of us were in work clothes, some in casual clothes. And then when we discovered the information, we were all shocked and surprised. We were like the audience, too, and then we looked at each other as if to say, ‘This is really happening.'”

Grey’s Anatomy It airs Thursday, January 8 at 10pm ET on ABC and will be available on Hulu the following day.
