As concerns about AI’s impact on young people continue, OpenAI has introduced “age prediction” into ChatGPT which is designed to help identify young people and place reasonable restrictions on their conversations.
OpenAI has come under fire in recent years due to the potential effects of ChatGPT on children. The number of youth suicide has been linked to a chatbot, and, like other AI vendors, OpenAI has also been criticized for allowing ChatGPT to discuss sexual matters with young users. In April, the company was forced to deal with a mistake which allowed its chatbot to target users who were under 18 years of age.
The company has already been working on the problem of young users for some time, and its new “age prediction” feature only adds to the protection already in place. The new feature uses an AI algorithm that looks at user accounts specifically for “behavior and accounts,” in an attempt to identify younger users, OpenAI said. in a blog post Tuesday.
These “identifiers” include things like the user’s age, how long the account has been in use, and the times of day the account is usually active, the company said. The company already has filters designed to eliminate sexual content, violence, and other topics that may be problematic for users under the age of 18. If the age prediction system identifies an account as under 18, those filters are automatically applied.
If a user has been incorrectly designated as underage, there is a way to reset their “adult” account. They can send a selfie to their OpenAI Persona ID verification partner, OpenAI says.
