The grandmother and parents of two young children who were found with serious injuries, including multiple broken bones, are facing a slew of criminal charges in what Kentucky State Police are calling a “major case of child abuse.”

An arrest citation said the toddler was taken to the hospital privately but 911 was never called.
The child required “resuscitation” before being transferred to Norton Children’s Hospital in Louisville, where staff discovered the toddler had a fractured skull and multiple missing teeth, the citation said.
The child also suffered “extensive bruising,” “severe anemia” from blood loss, and rib fractures that were “at least two weeks old,” the citation said, noting that the child was “severely underweight/emaciated.”
After the hospital notified police, officers went to Shanks and Kuntz’s Louisville home and found another child, about one year old, “lying on a bed in the master bedroom with obvious signs of trauma,” the arrest warrant states.
A Kansas man was jailed this week and charged with felony child abuse for allegedly causing serious head injuries to a 1-year-old girl, according to an affidavit provided by investigators. Kevin Mitchell, 30, has been in jail on $75,000 bail since Dec. 17 after the 1-year-old victim was found unresponsive.
The child, who was also described as severely emaciated, was taken to hospital with three possible skull fractures, a possible mandibular fracture, a missing tooth, “severe anemia” from blood loss and more injuries, according to police.
Shanks and Kuntz were later interviewed by police, who said they failed to provide medical help to the children.
Both parents were arrested on charges of first-degree assault, including domestic violence, first-degree criminal abuse of a child 12 years or younger, first-degree wanton endangerment and endangering the welfare of a minor due to injury to a child, police said.
Information on legal representation for Shanks and Kunz was not immediately available.
One day after the children were arrested, the children’s grandmother, according to court documents, Yvonne Shankswas arrested for abuse. Yvonne is Nicholas’ mother.
During an interview on Friday, Jan. 16, Yvonne told police she saw one of the children injured the morning before and said she “failed to contact police or get the child medical treatment,” according to her arrest warrant.
“Her actions, with extreme disregard for the value of human life, created a serious risk of death for the child and caused serious bodily harm,” the citation states. “The suspect allowed the 11-month-old victim to be placed in the care of another person who caused serious bodily harm.”
A Missouri mother and her boyfriend have been accused of severely abusing her children, including shooting her 13- and 14-year-old sons with a BB gun while they were locked in a chicken pen. Records show Yvonne was charged with first-degree assault-domestic violence, first-degree criminal abuse of a child 12 years or younger, first-degree wanton endangerment and endangering the welfare of a minor.
Information about her legal representation was not immediately available.
Yvonne pleaded not guilty to the charges at her trial on Saturday, January 17. courier magazine the report said.

In addition to child abuse charges, Kevin also faces drug-related charges, court documents show.
After he was taken into custody on January 15, a search found “a loose translucent crystal-like substance consistent with methamphetamine” in his pants, according to police.
