The Trump administration admits that DOGE may have misused Americans’ Social Security information

Two members of Elon Musk’s Department of Public Works may have obtained and shared Social Security numbers to help a campaign to “overturn election results in other states” last year, according to court documents.

Revelation, which was first reported by Politicoit comes as part of a correction to earlier testimony by Social Security Administration officials regarding legal disputes over DOGE’s access to Social Security data.

Even two members of the DOGE, or the advocacy group, were not named in the court documents.

In March 2025, a political advocacy group contacted two DOGE team members at the Social Security Administration (SSA) “with a request to review state voter rolls obtained by the activist group,” Elizabeth Shapiro, an employee of the Department of Justice, wrote in court filings.

“The campaign’s goal was to find evidence of voter fraud and tampering with election results in other states,” Shapiro said.

Shapiro wrote that after these messages, one of the DOGE members, as an employee of the SSA, signed and sent a “Voter Data Agreement” with the advocacy group.

Members of the DOGE may have obtained confidential information that was ruled illegal by the court at the time, and shared information on unauthorized “third party” servers.

“At this time, there is no evidence that SSA employees outside of the working members of the DOGE Team were aware of the communications with the advocacy group. Nor were they aware of the ‘Voter Data Agreement,'” Shapiro wrote.

It’s unclear whether the two DOGE members were able to share the information, according to Shapiro, but the emails “suggest that members of the DOGE Group may have been asked to assist the lobbying group in obtaining SSA information to connect with voters.”

According to Shapiro, the SSA dismissed two DOGE employees for violating the Hatch Act, a law that prohibits government employees from taking their political positions.

Last year, A federal judge issued the order prevent DOGe members from accessing SSA systems, which include SSNs, medical records, driver’s license numbers, tax information, and other personal information. After that, the SSA whistler said DOGE raised hundreds of millions in Social Security benefits to an insecure cloud server.
