Grubhub parents get Requests for restaurant startups


Grubhub’s parent company, Wonder, has announced an acquisition Askrestaurant payment software.

Launched in 2021, Claim offers cashback rewards at local restaurants that users can redeem for dine-in or takeout. Restaurants partner with Claim to create promotions, promote seat occupancy, and track performance data through the Claim dashboard.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed; However, Claim raised $20 million, it saidwhen he raised $12 million Series A in October, 2024. PitchBook estimated his value at $62 million.

Grubhub says the acquisition will give restaurants on its platform access to Claim customers and booking tools, while Grubhub restaurants will earn additional cash and dining rewards.

“Combining award-winning experiences with powerful machine learning models, we match restaurants with all-time greats. Claims have revolutionized these businesses, and joining Grubhub is an exciting new role as we reach millions of restaurants and thousands of restaurants,” Ask CEO and co-founder Sam Obletz in a statement.

Grubhub told TechCrunch that all members of the Claim team have been extended to join Grubhub.

Under Grubhub, Claim will enable more restaurants to connect with consumers through their payments. Grubhub says this will reduce customer acquisition costs and drive return trips, all without adding complexity.

“Claim’s award winning technology brings a powerful new way for our restaurant partners to dine out and leverage Grubhub’s marketing tools,” said Howard Migdal, CEO of Grubhub in a statement. “With Grubhub and Claim together under one roof, we can extend Claim’s data-driven tools to our more than 415,000 merchants and help our nearly 20 million diners save more money at their favorite restaurants.”

Applications are now available for Grubhub merchants and restaurants in New York City, with plans for the rest of the world later this year.

Grubhub told TechCrunch that Claim will continue to be available to existing merchants and consumers through the Claim app and website “for the time being.” In the coming months, the company plans to create a “transformational experience” for both Grubhub and Claim apps for both diners and diners, but did not elaborate on what that might look like.

For those currently using Claim, Grubhub says there may be some changes to the products and how rewards are paid out, but users should continue to expect local promotions and rewards at local restaurants.

Investors in Claim included VMG Technology, Sequoia Capital, Susa Ventures, Lightbank, and Metalab Ventures.
