A survivor of a gang rape in the northern Indian state of Haryana has been discharged from hospital a week after the horrific attack, a police officer told the BBC.
On the morning of December 30, the 26-year-old mother of two was admitted to hospital in Faridabad with severe head and facial injuries and multiple fractures.
Her sister said she was out visiting a friend and was waiting for transport just after midnight when two men in an ambulance gave her a lift. They took her to a deserted area, raped her and threw her from the speeding car.
A police spokesman said swift action resulted in the arrest of two men and the seizure of the vehicle.
After treatment and surgery, the woman was discharged from the hospital on Monday night.
Senior police officer Mukesh Kumar told the BBC they had approached the court to allow her to visit the prison for an “identification parade”.
Once the court order comes, she is asked to identify two suspects from a group of men.
Police said the crime occurred on the night of December 29 to December 30.
Faridabad police public relations officer Yashpal Yadav said: “The incident took place between 12.30 and 02:00 am. One of them stood outside the van and observed the surroundings, while the other raped the woman inside the van.”
He added that police questioned the suspect, who was later taken to court and sent to jail.
A doctor at the hospital treating the survivors said the woman was “brought in at around 05:30 on December 30… She suffered a lot of injuries”.
Shalini Chopra, a social worker and opposition politician who spoke to the survivor after she was discharged from hospital, told the BBC that the woman was “improving but still in pain”.
The case sparked anger and outrage in India and drew comparisons to the gang rape of a 23-year-old woman on a Delhi bus in December 2012.
The crime made global headlines, sparked massive protests in Delhi and several other cities and forced the government to introduce tough new anti-rape laws that include the death penalty for the most horrific attacks.
Four men found guilty of gang rape and murder hanged In 2020, a rapist died in prison and a teenager was released after spending time in a correctional center.
But despite increased scrutiny of sex crimes since then, tens of thousands of rapes and sexual assaults are still reported every year.
According to the latest police records, 29,670 cases of rape and 2,796 cases of attempted rape were reported in 2023. In addition, police recorded 849 cases of child rape and 94 cases of attempted rape.
