Getty ImagesUS President Donald Trump’s second term is defined by his foreign policy ambitions.
He followed through on his threat to Venezuela, capturing the Venezuelan president and his wife from their heavily fortified Caracas compound in a dramatic overnight raid.
In describing the operation, Trump revisited the 1823 Monroe Doctrine and its commitment to U.S. hegemony in the Western Hemisphere, renaming it the “Donroe Doctrine.”
Here are some of the warnings he has issued to other countries around Washington in recent days.
The United States already has a military base in Greenland — the Pitufik space base — but Trump wants the entire island.
“From a national security perspective, we need Greenland,” he told reporters, adding that the region was “full of Russian and Chinese ships.”
This huge Arctic island is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and is located about 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers) northeast of the United States.
It is rich in rare earth minerals and is critical to the production of smartphones, electric vehicles and military hardware. Currently, China’s rare earth output far exceeds that of the United States.
Greenland also occupies an important strategic location in the North Atlantic, with access to The Arctic Circle is increasingly important. As polar ice melts in the coming years, new shipping routes are expected to open.
Greenland Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen responded to Trump, saying the concept of U.S. control of the island was “fantasy“.
“No more pressure. No more hints. No more annexation fantasies. We are willing to dialogue. We are willing to discuss. But it must be through appropriate channels and respecting international law,” he said.
Any U.S. attempt to seize Greenland would put it on a collision course with another NATO member, potentially putting the alliance in jeopardy.
Hours after the Venezuela operation ended, Trump warned Colombian President Gustavo Petro to “be careful.”
Colombia, Venezuela’s western neighbor, has large oil reserves and is a major producer of gold, silver, emeralds, platinum and coal.
It is also an important hub for the region’s drug trade – especially cocaine.
Trump’s dispute with the country’s leftist president has escalated since the United States began attacking ships in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific in September – claiming without evidence that the vessels were carrying drugs.
USA Sanctions imposed on Petro in Octobersaying he was allowing the cartels to “thrive.”
Speaking aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump said Colombia was “run by a sick man who loves to make cocaine and sell it to the United States.”
“He won’t do this for a long time,” he said. Asked whether the United States would take action against Colombia, Trump responded: “That sounds good to me.”
Historically, Colombia has been a close ally of Washington’s war on drugs, receiving hundreds of millions of dollars in military aid each year to fight drug cartels.
Iran is currently facing Massive anti-government protestsTrump warned overnight that local authorities would be hit “very hard” if more protesters died.
“We’re watching this very closely. If they start killing people like they have in the past, I think they’re going to get a very serious crackdown from the United States,” he told reporters aboard Air Force One.
Iran theoretically does not fall within the scope of the “Dongluo Doctrine” definition, but Trump has previously threatened the Iranian regime to take further actions. attack its nuclear facilities last year.
The attacks followed a massive Israeli campaign aimed at crippling Iran’s ability to develop nuclear weapons, culminating in the 12-day Israeli-Iranian conflict.
During Trump’s meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at Mar-a-Lago last week, Iran was said to be top of the agenda. US media reported that Netanyahu raised the possibility of launching new strikes against Iran in 2026.
Trump’s rise to power in 2016 was marked by his call to “build a wall” along Mexico’s southern border.
On his first day back in office in 2025, he signed an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico “Gulf of America“.
He often claims that Mexican authorities are not doing enough to stop the flow of drugs or illegal immigrants into the United States.
Speaking on Sunday, he said drugs were “flooding” into Mexico and “we have to take action,” adding that drug cartels there were “very powerful.”
Trump has said he is willing to send U.S. troops to Mexico to fight the cartels, but President Claudia Scheinbaum has publicly rejected any U.S. military action on Mexican soil.
The island nation, located 90 miles (145 kilometers) south of Florida, has been under U.S. sanctions since the early 1960s.
It has close ties with Nicolás Maduro’s Venezuela, which reportedly supplies around 30% of Cuba’s oil in exchange for doctors and medical personnel traveling in the other direction.
Havana could be at risk if supplies collapse after Maduro steps down.
Trump said on Sunday that there was no need for U.S. military intervention because Cuba was “ready to fall.”
“I don’t think we need to take any action,” he said. “It looks like it’s going down.”
“I don’t know if they will stick with it, but Cuba has no revenue now,” he added. “All of their revenue comes from Venezuela, from Venezuelan oil.”
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio – the son of Cuban immigrants – has long called for regime change in Cuba and told reporters on Saturday: “If I were living in Havana and serving in government, I would be concerned – at least a little bit”.
“When the president speaks, you should take him seriously,” he said.
