“As I lay on the ice, my heart rate slowed, and right there, on that New Year’s Day, unbeknownst to my daughter, my sisters, my friends, my father, my mother, I was just tired,” Renner writes in the book. “Being on the ice for about 30 minutes, doing long periods of manual breathing, the equivalent of 10 or 20 push-ups a minute for half an hour… that’s when I died.”

“But I quickly realized that it was important for me to get out of my own damn way. Reliving it, retelling it, owning it in a different way, taking it word for word, was very healing for me,” he continued. “And, it didn’t just happen to me. It happened to my poor nephew, too, holding my arm and watching me bleed and all that. It was healing for him. For my mother, she had to get a call and drive 13 hours in a snowstorm to get to the hospital to pick me up. It was healing in a lot of ways.”

The book is not the first time Renner has publicly recalled the details of a snowplow accident. He also recounted the experience in multiple media interviews, including men’s health July 2024.

“I remember every swing,” he told the outlet at the time. “I remember hitting my head on that thing and it was crushing me – just like you can imagine. An immovable object and a crushing force, something had to give way. But thank God my skull didn’t completely give in.”
