Earthquake interrupts Mexican president’s press conference

President Claudia Sheinbaum calmly stopped her press conference when a 6.5-magnitude earthquake shook the room and activated the national earthquake warning system.

Earlier on Friday, an earthquake struck the Mexican state of Guerrero, disrupting Scheinbaum’s first news conference of the year. Some residents took to the streets after hearing about Mexico’s earthquake warning system, which was activated after a deadly 1985 earthquake that killed at least 5,000 people.

Video showed buildings shaking in Mexico City and cars shaking in Acapulco, Guerrero state.

The epicenter was near the town of San Marcos, near the Pacific coast resort of Acapulco, according to Mexico’s national earthquake agency. No injuries or major damage were reported.
