“Once the third cousins are removed, it’s completely legal. Totally legal,” she said with a laugh. “Polygamy is illegal. I’m Cody’s third cousin.”
David, 61, speechlessafter hearing the affection between his wife and her ex-husband, she just whispered “Wow”.
Kristen’s former sister-wife – still a close friend/family member – Janelle BrownHowever, she said it was a running joke in their family that Kody and Kristen were a family before they were married.
“There’s always this joke that they’re cousins but they’re so distantly related, it’s ridiculous,” Jenelle, 56, told the camera. “I think that happens a lot in polygamous families.”
Jenelle clarified, “It’s not a meet-at-the-family-party kind of relationship, it’s a very distant relationship. But they always joke about being cousins. It’s just a little community.”
Because of her own family connections, Janelle saw firsthand how small the world of polygamy can be.
Before marrying Kody in 1993, Janelle was married to Meri Brownbrother, Adam Barbertwo years ago. (Meri, 54, was Kody’s first wife, whom he married in 1990. The couple confirmed their split in January 2023.)
“I think we’re probably physically living together, actually living together, for about six months,” Jenelle said in a November 2024 appearance onKate Casey’s real life” podcast, teasing that it “qualifies” for a “gateway marriage.”

“My mom came to save me from polygamy because her daughter wasn’t going to marry some crazy cult,” Jenelle recalled in an interview. November episodes sister wives. “She ended up marrying Cody’s father.”
Sheryl and Winn tied the knot in 1992, and Janelle became Kody’s second wife a year later. Cheryl and Winn remained in a polyamorous relationship until his death in 2013. Meanwhile, Jenelle confirmed that she separated from Kody in December 2022.
While Kristen’s connection with Cody surprised some, it wasn’t the only focus of this week’s episode. Cody eventually traveled to Cedar City, Utah to meet with Meri and complete his self-proclaimed apology tour to his ex-wife.
The conversation was difficult at best, and Meri and Cody had an argument more than once during their time together. When Meri takes issue with Cody raising her friendsHe was allegedly badmouthing him and trying to refocus attention on his apology.
“Listen, there’s a big need for an apology here because this is still very toxic. I apologize for that,” Kody told Meri of their ongoing feud.
Meri pointedly asked, “Are you apologizing for being toxic to me, or are you just speaking in general terms?” Cody responded, “Yeah, I’m sorry that I was toxic to you, Meri, or was toxic to you.”
When Kody continues to use the word “apology,” it eats away at his former first wife.
“You have to stop using the word ‘apology.’ The more you use it, The more insincere it feels,” Meri shared, noting that it “wasn’t triggering” for her, but it “confirmed that this wasn’t a genuine conversation. “
“Your use of the word ‘apology’ feels very extreme to me and very forced,” Meri explained.
Cody admitted, “I actually felt uncomfortable, Meri. I was triggered as soon as we met. I apologize for that.”
Despite a lot of arguments between the two, they ended the conversation with a hug – but with very different feelings about what happened.
“From now on, I want the sword to be put down. If we can move forward in the future, just make sure we’re very nice, we might be able to keep a good relationship with each other,” Cody told the camera.
Meri, meanwhile, revealed, “I’m not sure right now, you know, what this all means. Throughout the divorce process, during the estate process, I’ve found out a lot of things since then. But it doesn’t affect me. I didn’t listen to what he said.”
