Spanish throw flour, eggs and fireworks in mock battle

The Spanish town of Ibi is awash with flour and eggshells at the annual food fight festival “Els Enfarinats.”

Each year, participants dress up in military uniforms and stage a fake coup using eggs, flour and firecrackers.

Instigators go around asking locals for a “tax” – a donation to charity – and if you don’t pay, you may end up being slapped with the dirty laundry.

This festival has been held in the province of Alicante for more than 200 years and is held every year on December 28, coinciding with April Fools’ Day – the Spanish equivalent of April Fools’ Day.
