“The show is really about Emily’s relationship with Paris. So she has to discover what Paris means to her by going to other places,” Fleming shared. “She always comes back to Paris. But we shot a lot in Italy. We shot four episodes in Rome, then five in Paris, and then one in Venice. So half of the season was shot outside of France, which was huge for us.”

“I would say that was probably the biggest challenge — the musical moment when Mindy sings ‘Espresso,’ because on the boat, we shot in one location. When she walks off the boat, we shot in a second location. When she walks into the party, that’s a third location,” Fleming shared. “It was a matter of choreographing the number. But we were shooting those three things on three different days, in three different locations. So there was a lot to keep track of.”

Marcello put in just as much effort behind the scenes as he tried to put together his first fashion show.

“It was the most complex scene we’d ever done on the show. You couldn’t just go in and flood a square in Venice, they wouldn’t let you. We had to find a place where we could build a reservoir in part of the square. It’s a real runway, that’s real water,” the director said. “But the rest of it was all digital. That was another overall challenge. But I would say that sequence was more work than any other sequence in all five seasons of the show.”

“With four characters, a proposal and a twist of fate on a gondola that day, it was a challenge. I was really worried, but it went well,” Fleming told us. “What we did was actually mount the camera to the pod and put the actors in it. And off they went.”

He concluded: “I had a little monitor that I would run with. But I think they loved it because they were independent of us. They had to be at their best for the entire shoot. But it was a process.”
