“I’ve been thinking about this idea for several seasons, actually, maybe even longer, and it felt like I had to do it at some point,” Minear told Deadline in April 2025. “When I came up with the idea of ​​a lab breach, I just knew it was time to do it and it felt like a real opportunity to give someone an epic Wrath of Khan-like death.”
He continued, “When it came time to decide who this person should be, I wanted that character to impact all the characters’ stories in a very specific but different way. There was only one person who could do that job, and that was Bobby.”
