Lindsay VonnA heroic attempt at Olympic immortality ended in devastating agony.
Vonn, 41, falls in women’s downhill race 2026 Winter Olympics on Sunday, February 8, just 9 days after her death. She had a completely torn ACL..
The accident occurred 13 seconds into the American skier’s run. Vonn could be heard screaming in pain as he was attended to by medical staff at the Olimpia del Tofane stadium in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.
Warne was eventually airlifted off the field by a helicopter in a scene similar to what was staged January 30 when she tore her ACL during a World Cup match in Crans-Montana, Switzerland.
“Lindsey Vonn is injured but is in stable condition and is being cared for well by a team of American and Italian doctors.” The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team said a statement on Sunday.

“Haha, thanks doctor,” Vaughn Published via Saturday, February 7th. “Up until last Friday, my ACL was fully functional. Just because it seems impossible to you, doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Yes, my ACL was 100 percent ruptured. Not 80 percent or 50 percent. It was 100 percent gone.”
Vaughan also shouted USA Todayof Greg Graeber On Saturday, he wrote a column questioning why Vaughn was playing with a torn ACL.
“I’m sorry Greg, but this is a very strange opinion piece,” Vaughan wrote byX. “Pain and suffering is the point? Am I looking for meaning? Why am I taking risks at my age?” “This ageist thing is outdated.”
She continued, “My life is not centered around ski racing. I am a woman who loves to ski. I have no identity issues and I know exactly who I am. I am retired for 6 years and I have a great life. I don’t need to ski, but I love to ski. I came all the way to be here for my last Olympics and I will do my best with or without an ACL. It’s that simple. With all due respect, if you don’t know the story, I’ll tell you.” Maybe it’s best not to make assumptions. “
Vonn revealed she completely tore her ACL on Tuesday, February 3, but vowed to stay the course and make an Olympic comeback when she announces her return to competition in November 2024.
“Well…I completely tore my ACL last Friday,” Vaughn shared via Instagram. “I also suffered a bone bruise (which is a common injury when an ACL is torn), plus a torn meniscus, but it’s unclear how many previous bone injuries there were or what’s new about this accident. It’s obviously incredibly difficult news to receive a week before the Olympics. I really appreciate everyone giving me the time and space to process what happened and find a way forward.”
She continued, “After extensive consultation with the doctor, rigorous therapy, physical testing and today’s skiing, I am certain that I am capable of competing in Sunday’s Olympic downhill race. Of course, I still need to do a training session, as will be required for Sunday’s race, but… I am confident in my body’s ability to perform. Despite the injury, my knee is stable, I have no swelling, and my muscles are functioning and responding normally. Obviously, I’m going to continue to evaluate with my medical team every day to make sure we make informed decisions, but I fully intend to play Sunday. “
