Easttown, Pennsylvania is an unforgiving place, but it’s nothing compared to Mare Sheehan (Kate Winslet). The forty-year-old detective acts seriously and decisively, and she has no time for random thoughts. When a teenage mother is found brutally murdered in a canyon, she must figure out not only who did it and why, but how it ties into the recent disappearance of a young woman.
If this was just a suspense drama east town mare It can only be great. But the genius of this limited series is that it’s also a character study of a woman struggling to hold on under the weight of tremendous trauma. Mare is imperfect, and she is often haunted by the mistakes she made in the past.
Winslet embodies Marley’s flaws and delivers one of the best performances on television in the past decade. She’s as good as the show she’s on, and has a top-notch cast (Gene Smart, Julianne Nicholson and Evan Peters) who supports her. A second season has been discussed but has yet to be confirmed. Fingers crossed that Mare returns to solve another case and battle her inner demons.
