Milo Ventimiglia won the hearts of generations Play as a fan-favorite character In a show like this this is us and gilmore girls. He forges new partnerships with financial services firms Edward Jonesactor – and new dad! – Tell us All about the money advice he’s learned along the way. Now, he says, it’s all about simplicity.
Be responsible. My mom would say to me, “If you really want something, wait until you can’t take it anymore.” Give it some time. It doesn’t matter. You don’t have to have this now. That’s always been my focus, I know I’m not in a traditional job and I have to make sure I’m accountable for everything I spend my money on.
I was a waiter at my parents’ friend’s restaurant in Orange County. At the same time, I worked in a warehouse bakery packaging sweet rolls.
Minimum wage in 1990, ’91: $4.25 an hour, about the same.

Edward JonesGoing through what my wife is going through (Plunder Mariano) and me going through this year (losing our home in the Los Angeles fires), we didn’t need anything but a roof over our heads and food on the table. The simple necessities of life. But now I’m like, “What does my child need? What will give her freedom?” From “Hey, let me make sure I have a pacifier so she can sleep” to “Well, I should probably set up a 529 exchange (account) so her college expenses can be paid for.” I learned this from friends who were fathers before me.
We’re doing great. My wife is the strongest person I know and being able to recover from these things is huge. But at the same time, a year later (we’re) still dealing with insurance! We are still dealing with the remnants of the fire, but thank God we have been responsible with our funds and finances and prepared for something like this to happen.
Funnily enough, I am both. There was a time in my early 20s when I basically ran out of money. I don’t like this feeling and I (don’t) want this to happen again. That’s when I started to really prepare and make sure I had financial stability…I adopted (the idea you need) two pairs of stuff: one to wash and one to wear. Considering the year my wife and I have had, (we) try to live simply.
I don’t think my best investments are necessarily stocks or companies. It’s an investment in myself; believing in myself as an artist and saying, “You know what? I’m going to make it. I can do this.”
Life is hard and for all of us life is constantly trying to beat you down at some point. I think if you give yourself a little grace and prepare yourself on an emotional level, on a financial level, on a spiritual level, you can make it happen in a controlled way. You need to see the happy side and stay focused and positive.
